“My name is Gianna. I’m 18 and from Ashburton, where I have lived my whole life. I have just finished Year 13 and am moving to Christchurch, where I will be studying a Bachelor of Science. Some of my hobbies include sport, music, theatre and dance.
I started volunteering from a young age. Being from a smaller community, I’ve always seen the importance of giving back and helping others. In year 9, I began doing my Duke of Edinburgh qualifications. I found out about SVA and thought it’d be cool to start logging my hours. I’ve since done all sorts of volunteering, from babysitting to helping the elderly, being on a local youth advisory group to helping out at sport, school, church and anywhere else I see a need. Through volunteering, I get to appreciate things that I might otherwise take for granted. It gives me other opportunities to grow and give back, and it is super rewarding as I can see others enjoying the same things that I do.
Volunteering has helped me to build relationships with people who I may not have known otherwise. I love the connections with people of all ages, from young kids I’ve babysat to youth and adults I’ve worked with. Volunteering has taught me dedication, organisation, leadership and passion - all things that I can continue to grow in and develop.
