Faces of Service: Mya & Mikayla

"Helping my grandparents with their devices got me thinking about other elderly people who may be in the same boat. Devices like smart phones and laptops should make navigating our ever-increasing digital world easier, but for older people this isn't always the case. I decided to create my own technology lessons for seniors.

Through the Fair Go annual Consumer Heroes competition, my friend Mikayla and I were connected to a local retirement village. Running the lessons at Russley Village made me think about opening the idea up to other retirement villages and my wider community.

Mikayla and I have been going every two weeks since 2022, and I think it's a fantastic way to make new friends. For older people it can be hard to get out there and have fun, but when we come along they love to come out to see us girls.

Volunteering with the Student Volunteer Army has benefited me in numerous ways, Through this experience, I have honed my communication and teamwork skills by collaborating with diverse groups of people towards common goals. Additionally, I've developed problem-solving abilities and adaptability as we encounter various challenges during volunteer projects.

Volunteering with SVA is an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only will you have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in your community, but you'll also develop valuable skills, forge lasting friendships, and gain a sense of fulfilment that comes from giving back."
